Description
A 1:100,000 scale zoning map identifies areas in Colombia suitable for commercial bulb onion farming during the first semester. The dataset classifies land into five categories from High Suitability to Legal Exclusion based on physical, socio-ecosystem, and socioeconomic criteria. It was produced by applying a methodology documented in December 2019 and is hosted on the Colombian open data portal.
Use Cases
Classify municipal land suitability for onion cultivation using the Aptitud column and Código Dane Municipio.
Calculate total suitable area per department by aggregating Área (ha) values grouped by Departamento.
Perform spatial analysis of suitability zones by joining municipal geometries from The_geom with Aptitud categories.
Analyze the distribution of legal exclusions versus low-suitability areas using the Aptitud column and municipal identifiers.
Strengths
Provides a detailed five-category suitability classification (Aptitud) based on a documented methodology from December 2019.
Includes precise municipal and departmental identifiers (Código Dane Municipio, Código Dane Departamento) for linking with other Colombian datasets.
Contains a calculated area in hectares (Área (ha)) for each zoning polygon.
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
