Description
New high-resolution strontium, carbon, and oxygen isotope data from a 1751-meter stratigraphic drill hole completed in 2020. The data, presented at the 2023 Australian Earth Science Convention, aims to improve understanding of paleo-depositional environments in the Carrara Sub-basin. Samples were collected from the Paleozoic Georgina Basin and the Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation intersected by the drillhole.
Use Cases
Reconstructing paleo-depositional environments based on strontium, carbon, and oxygen isotope ratios.
Analyzing local and global chemostratigraphy trends recorded in Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks.
Assessing basin connectivity to the global ocean during the Cambrian period using strontium isotope ratios.
Identifying diagenetic alteration in carbonate samples through correlated shifts in carbon and oxygen isotopes.
Strengths
Data is derived from the first drillhole to intersect Proterozoic rocks of the recently discovered Carrara Sub-basin.
The drill hole intersected approximately 625 meters of Paleozoic and 1120 meters of Proterozoic rock sections.
High-resolution isotope data includes strontium (87Sr/86Sr), carbon (δ13C), and oxygen (δ18O) measurements.
Limitations
The majority of samples show significant alteration, limiting their use for assessing primary depositional conditions.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale analysis.
